Guide to acne scars treatment
The good news for people with acne scars is that there are lots of different types of treatments available today to help correct them. This isn’t a how to get rid of acne scars yourself guide, but instead an overview of the different possible treatments that have been shown to produce results. There are various home remedies, but these are often costly and in many cases don’t work as well as medical methods.
You should always talk to your doctor about which of the treatment methods are the best for you. Not all treatments are safe for everyone - it depends on your age, medical history and how severe the scars are. SOme treatments are also costly so it may come partly down to budget, but your doctor will be able to advise you which will give the best results in a safe way.
Chemical Peels
These remove the top layer of the skin, forcing it to regenerate itself which often decreases the visibility of scars. They aren’t just used for acne scars although they can be used for this purpose. Other uses include for skin damaged by the sun or other types of scarring due to injury.
Collagen Injections
By injecting collagen into the skin you are replacing the collagen that should naturally be there but has been lost. This helps especially with smaller scarring such as wrinkles and facial lines, although it is sometimes used for acne scars too. Your dermatologist will be able to advise you whether it is a suitable treatment for you.
Laser Treatment
This comes in two forms, ablative and non ablative. The basic idea is that the high energy laser burns away the damaged skin. The two different types refers to whether the outer layer or skin or skin beneath the surface is burned away. It is used to soften wrinkles and reduce the visibility of scars, and can be used in the case of acne scars with great effect. Again ask your dermatologist whether this is the right kind of treatment for your situation.
There are various other forms of treatment available including punch grafts, and all are good in different situations for removing acne scars. Your doctor will be able to advise you on the best form of treatment for your situation as it does vary widely from patient to patient. Even with home remedies you should always check with your doctor to make sure you aren’t going to make the situation worse.
Getting rid of acne scars doesn’t have to be difficult. Knowing how to remove acne scars is usually half the battle, so don’t despair if you have them! Your doctor is always the best person to go to, but if you know anyone who has had scars removed then you could also speak to them about their experiences as they will be able to give you an accurate representation of how it has worked for them.
